The Handbags That Look More Expensive Than They Are

Don't overlook a good shoulder bag

Shoulder bags are probably the easiest option if you want something that looks stylish without feeling too formal.

I especially like slightly rounded shapes at the moment. They feel softer than a very structured tote but still look polished.

JW PEI has a lot of bags in this sort of style, and the brand is worth checking if you like fashion-forward designs without wanting to spend luxury-brand money.

I've been looking at JW PEI's Joy Shoulder Bag lately, and I really like how simple it is. It has that slightly structured shape without looking too formal, so you can easily use it with everyday outfits. The White, Brown, Black and Steel Blue versions are currently listed at $99, so there are a few different directions you can take depending on what you normally wear.

I think the brown would be especially easy for fall. Throw it over a sweater with jeans and boots, or wear it with a simple dress when you want something a little more polished.

The Gabbi Ruched Hobo Handbag in White is another one I really like from JW PEI. It's a completely different shape from the Joy, so it has a softer, more relaxed feel. The ruched detailing gives it a little something extra without making the bag look overly busy. It's currently listed at $99 as well.

And honestly, the white is what caught my attention. It would look really good with denim, especially if you're wearing a darker pair of jeans and want something to brighten up the outfit.

If you already have a basic black shoulder bag, I'd probably go for the white Gabbi or the brown Joy instead. Both would give your wardrobe something different without being difficult to style.

JW PEI also has plenty of smaller bags if you don't carry much during the day.

A brown handbag might be your best purchase

Black bags are easy, but I think brown deserves more attention.

A chocolate brown or warm tan bag can work with so many colors. Cream, denim, black, grey, burgundy, olive. It all works.

Madewell has some nice leather options in this area, but if you're looking for something a little less familiar, Quince is another brand I'd check.

Quince's Italian Leather Triple Compartment Crossbody is a good example of the kind of bag I'm talking about. It's simple, has enough structure to look polished and doesn't have a huge logo sitting on the front.

That's usually a good sign for me.

If you like a bigger bag, keep the design simple

I'm a big fan of a roomy handbag, especially when you actually need to carry more than your phone and lip gloss.

The trick is finding one that doesn't look overly bulky.

Cuyana's System Tote

This tote is a good example of a larger bag that still has a clean shape. It's designed around a simple tote silhouette, so it works with everyday outfits without looking like you're carrying a work bag everywhere.

If you're looking for something similar at a lower price, Quince has several leather totes worth browsing too.

I'd keep a larger bag in a neutral color and let the shape do the work. There's really no need for lots of buckles, chains and decorations when the bag already has a good silhouette.

A smaller bag can still make a big impact

Not everyone wants to carry a huge handbag, and honestly, sometimes a small bag looks even better with an outfit.

If you're going somewhere for dinner, meeting friends or just don't feel like carrying your entire life around, a small shoulder or crossbody bag is enough.

JW PEI is one brand I'd look at for this. They have plenty of compact styles with interesting shapes and textures, so you can add something a little more fun without spending a fortune.

This is also where I'd be more willing to experiment with color. If your everyday bag is black or brown, a burgundy, cream or muted green mini bag can be a nice change.

You don't need a giant logo

This is probably my biggest tip when you're looking for a bag that looks expensive.

Skip the giant logos.

A clean bag with good proportions, nice material and simple hardware will usually look more elevated than one that's covered in branding.

That's why I keep coming back to brands like Quince, JW PEI & Cuyana. Their bags tend to let the shape and material speak for themselves.

You can wear one with a really simple outfit and it still feels finished.

So, which one would I actually buy?

It really depends on what you're missing from your wardrobe.

If you need an everyday bag that can hold everything, I'd look at a structured tote. If you already have one, a smaller shoulder bag might be more useful.

For something classic, I'd go for brown or black leather. If your wardrobe is mostly neutrals, that's also when I'd consider adding a little color.

And if you're trying to get that expensive-looking feel without spending a ridiculous amount, I'd pay more attention to the shape, material and hardware than the name on the bag.

You really don't need a luxury logo to make an outfit look good.

Sometimes a simple bag, the right pair of jeans and a great pair of shoes are all you need.
